The story

The Breitling Chronomat 44 GMT, ref. AB0420, pairs bold, rugged design with the practical detail of a travel chronograph. Contemporary reviews place it in Breitling’s early-2010s collection and describe its in-house automatic cal. B04 as a development of the Calibre 01, adding GMT functionality to the chronograph. Its independent local hour hand jumps forwards or backwards in one-hour increments, with the date adjusting in tandem. This makes changing time zones a deliberate, straightforward adjustment rather than an interruption to the journey. This example, dated circa 2020–2025, has a 44 mm steel case and a grey dial. Its metallic character recalls shades associated with names such as Stratus Gray or Metallica Grey, though neither is confirmed as its factory colour designation. The substantial proportions give it a clear presence on the wrist, balancing the dial’s quieter tone with the purposeful character of the case. Presented in excellent condition, it also benefits from a new service.
