The story

Introduced in 2007, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier brought a softer silhouette to the maison’s watchmaking. Its rounded, convex case and distinctive crown guard express a modern, sculptural approach to the round wristwatch, distinct from the angular Tank and Santos families. A blue cabochon crown sits within an integrated protective arch, while the minute track curves inward at three o’clock. In this compact 28mm format, a battery-powered quartz movement offers the simplicity of wearing without winding. This example, ref. W6900156-3006, dates to circa 2010–2015 and pairs an 18K yellow gold case with a silver sunburst dial and black leather strap. The dial catches changing light against the warmth of the gold, while the black leather provides a quiet contrast.
